PUGLIA, the Southeast Coast of Italy
April 13 - 21, 2021
Cave dwellings in Matera Trulli dwellings in Alberobello Whitewashed houses in Ostuni
PUGLIA (called APULIA in English) has been tempting travelers since the ancient Greeks first glimpsed its rugged coastal beauty. Study the enduring influence of the region’s diverse cultural inheritance on architecture, food and languages. Learn how the rocky terrain produces thriving olive groves and vineyards, and revel in the sleepy pace of authentic southern Italy.
Meet in Bari, the capital city of the region of Puglia, located on the Adriatic Sea at the top of the heel of the boot, Italy’s southeast coast. We begin our discovery of Puglia’s wealth of architectural treasures, including the ancient warren of natural caves in Matera and the mysterious conical trulli dwellings of Alberobello. We admire Lecce’s baroque masterpieces, characterized by lavish decorative elements and impossibly intricate carvings. From Lecce, enjoy excursions to Gallipoli, and Otranto.
Then return up the coast to Trani, stopping in Ostuni, a tumble of white-washed buildings perched strategically atop a hill with views of the endless olive trees in the Valle d’Itria countryside and the glimmering Adriatic Sea. Visit Vieste and Peschici in the Gargano National Park, and, on the last day, tour Trani before flying home from Bari
